MARIJUANA MINISTRY

HONOLULU (AP) — Holy pot! A federal judge in Hawaii is considering whether Roger Christie can use a religious freedom defense in his pot case. Christie is the founder of the Hawaii Cannabis Ministry. He claims that marijuana is a sacrament and is charged with selling weed. A judge heard oral arguments yesterday on the religious freedom angle. Prosecutors say the judge should have a preliminary ruling tomorrow.

FREEWAY RACING

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — Wanna race? To jail? The Washington State Patrol reports busting a 24-year-old driver they say tried to race another car on I-5. Police say the young driver took off at 120 miles per hour. The would-be racer got quite a surprise when the driver of the other car hit the flashing lights. Turns out a state trooper was driving an unmarked car. The Olympian reports the young driver was arrested for investigation of reckless driving and driving with a suspended license.

FRANKENSTEIN POSTER-AUCTION

DALLAS (AP) — That old movie poster turns out to be worth big bucks. Keith Johnson had a poster that was sitting in his closet for more than 30 years. It was printed to promote the 1931 film “Frankenstein.” Now, that poster has sold for a record price of nearly $293,000. Dallas-based Heritage Auctions says the winning bidder doesn’t want to be named. Johnson says he bought the poster as a teenager for just few dollars.

HOUSE FIRE-SNAKES

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Flames? Sure. Smoke? No problem. Snakes? Yikes! Firefighters got quite surprise while fighting a kitchen blaze north of Salt Lake City. Authorities report there were 28 snakes in home, six of them deadly. The snakes were inside cages in a separate room and were safely taken out of the duplex. The snakes include five rattlers and a gaboon viper, considered one of the most dangerous in the world. North Davis Fire Chief Mark Becraft says about the only danger his firefighters faced was “the creep factor.” State wildlife officials seized the venomous snakes. Authorities say the owner could face charges.

VOICE TUNNEL-ART PROJECT

NEW YORK (AP) — Hello … hello … hello. Can you hear the echo? An artist is turning a New York City tunnel into a 1,300-foot-long echo chamber and light show. City officials will close the Park Avenue Tunnel between 33rd and 40th streets to traffic. It’s happening on three consecutive Saturdays, starting this coming weekend. The New York Times reports visitors will walk to middle of the tunnel and speak into a silver intercom. Their short messages will be accompanied by an arching light until the echoes disappear. The creator is Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, who’s known for large, interactive projects.

ANNAPOLIS CHICKEN SCULPTURES

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — Maryland’s capital city is turning chicken. There are 17 chicken sculptures lining the streets of Annapolis, with more to come. There’s a six-foot-tall chicken cyborg, a firefighter and even a Mona Lisa chicken. The Capital newspaper reports it’s all part of a campaign called “Hatching the Arts.” Sponsors pick up the tab for the $1,000 plastic birds and have artists decorate them.
